Michele K McLaren is a multidisciplinary artist who graduated from Bradley University in 1995. Originally pursuing a degree in engineering, she discovered a profound passion for the visual arts, prompting a life-altering shift in her focus. While her early work centered on art photography and ceramics, she also cultivated a deep love for painting, which has since become a central part of her artistic expression.
As a first-generation Finnish American, Michele draws inspiration from the minimalist forms and vivid hues characteristic of Finnish art. These influences are evident in her bold, abstract paintings—some stark and simplistic, others radiating with vivid color. Rich in symbolism, her works deeply reflect the nuances of the human experience.
When her neurodiverse child was born, Michele temporarily paused her artistic pursuits, channeling her creative energy into motherhood. While this journey interrupted her creative endeavors, it profoundly enriched her perspective. Now that her child requires less intensive care, she balances motherhood and painting, channeling her enriched perspective into vibrant works rich in symbolism and emotion.
“Although stepping away from creating art was challenging, the time spent experiencing the beauty and challenges of neurodiversity has significantly shaped my work. What initially seemed to pull me away from art has ultimately provided me with deeper fulfillment, personal growth, and a clearer sense of my artistic goals. This journey has enriched my understanding of the complexities of the human experience, which now resonates in my art.”
